15th/16th
Century Defensive Tower, Punta Chullera. Located just off the
beach across the coastal road from the Information Office. Many such
towers can be found along the Costa del Sol. The nearest is only
2km away at the small coastal town of Torreguadiaro. These towers
were part of an 'early-warning' system that would notify large castles
located back in the mountains of incoming invaders by lighting large
bonfires. These castles are still there and you are free to
visit them. Always built on the edge of steep precipice, you can
find excellent examples of such early medieval structures in Casares,
Jimena de la Frontera, and Mijas. All can be reached within 20-40
minutes drive from Punta Chullera.

his
is the spectacular view from the top of Punta Chullera, as seen from the
Altos de Chullera area. It looks out on to the entrance of the
Mediterranean with the Rock of Gibraltar front and center. Just
behind Gibraltar the outline of the Atlas mountains of Morocco
can be seen. The two together have been referred to by sailors since
antiquity as the 'Towers of Hercules'. Not surprisingly, the popular
superstition of the ancient times was that these mountains marked the end
of the world, and one should not proceed too far beyond this gate....
We would, however, recommend that
you do proceed. You would otherwise miss out on some of the best
that Spain has to offer. Tarifa, Europe's windsurfing capital
lies only 30 minutes drive away. Cadiz, reputed to be the
world's oldest continuously inhabited city, lies only a an hour further.
Seville, also within a few hour's drive, is my personal favourite.
This city is unique in its
blend of history and modern outgoing culture. Little compares with
an evening spent wandering around trying Finos, Tapas and Olives in this
city's quaint streets.
Along the Spanish coast on
the right side of the image you can see the Sotogrande sports
marina, an area well known for luxurious private yachts, polo,
championship level golf courses, and water sports. Further along the coast
lie the Spanish towns of La Linea and Algeciras, large
cities that share the Algeciras bay with Gibraltar.
